A Day Working on an Oyster Farm in Cape Cod
Ever wondered how oysters are grown? I spent a day working on a 2-acre oyster farm in East Dennis, MA — and learned exactly what goes into growing, harvesting, and eating some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever try.

The Oyster Farm Experience
Earlier today I met up with my brother, father and step mother before meeting Aaron and Eric who took us on a "working tour" of their 2 acre oyster farm in Crowes Pasture, East Dennis, MA. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Due to the timing of the tides, we arranged to meet them at 8:30 AM before heading out. Getting to Crowes Pasture is somewhat of an adventure — either walking or using a four-wheel drive vehicle.
What We Learned About Oyster Farming
- Do oysters make pearls? Rarely, but it can happen.
- What do oysters eat? Plankton, filtered directly from the water.
- How many oysters? Around 2.5 million on this farm.
If you're planning to try oysters at home, having the right knife matters. I put together a full breakdown here:

Getting Hands-On
We jumped right in. My job was moving smaller oysters from bags into cages. Others sorted oysters by size using a homemade sorting machine.
These guys balance full-time jobs while maintaining the farm. The tide ultimately dictates the workday, covering the oysters under 8–10 feet of water.
The Best Part
At the end of the day, Aaron handed me a bag and told me to take what I’d eat. I grabbed about 30 oysters.
I ate 10 for lunch, shared some with family, and finished the rest later. Easily some of the freshest oysters I’ve ever had.
